A business directory is a compilation of information listing companies and businesses. They are usually organized within categories based on their niche, location, activity, or scale of operations. The details listed for each entry will have general information like the business name, address, and contact information. Others may be more comprehensive and list their products or services, the region they serve, the size of the company, and any professional associations they may have.
Types of business directories
There are only two types of business directories - digital and print. Printed business directories, better known as yellow pages, are published annually by a local telephone company and they gain profit by selling advertisement spaces on their pages. However, with the increase in mobile usage over the past decade, only a small percentage of the population still uses hard copies of directories.
Coupled with the advent of the internet, directories have shifted to putting their databases digitally online rather than printing on yellow paper. Even the Yellow Pages company has realized its own dated practice as they now have their own online domain and they remain one of the biggest directories. The use of digital technology helps ensure that the directory’s information is always up to date while providing customers with ease of access and fast distribution. There is also the added feature of people being able to search for businesses based on their location, price point, and opening hours.
How do business directories work?
Online and printed business directories work the same way except that online directories can have links that lead interested visitors directly to your business’s website. A quick search on the online directory will show a list of all the businesses in the directory that relates to your search term and often, your general location. Like in any printed directory, the result for each business will include a link to the business’s website, a short description, their address, contact information. However, depending on the comprehensiveness of the online directory, customer reviews, comments, and feedback may also be included.
Are business directories important?
Business directories can be of vital importance, especially to small, growing businesses. Any good business marketing strategy should include a way to ensure maximum brand exposure and listing your business on multiple online directories is the most efficient way to boost your visibility in the market. It also helps ensure that prospective customers find you rather than happen by you. Simply put, the more business directories your business is listed on, the more public attention you will receive.
Examples of online business directories
Popular online business directories include Apple Maps, Yelp, Google My Business, Facebook, Bing, LinkedIn Company Directory, Foursquare, and of course, Yellow Pages. All of these are free so there is absolutely no reason for a business not to have an online presence anymore, especially in today’s highly technologically oriented society. Business directories are simple and offer a host of incredible benefits to any brand or company.
